The Lake County Historical Society applied to the state to get this statue in order to help Lake County learn more about the story of Florida in 1922. To be clear the 1920's were the beginnings of Jim Crow laws and historical revisionism driven by the Daughters of the Confederacy. The Museum started the acquisition process in secret and proposes to install the statue in the same location that Sheriff Willis McCall tortured the "Groveland Four" and was the home of his racist regime.
Please view this video for more information. Then ask your elected officials, who voted to support this installation, to place this statue at the Olustee Civil War battlefield or the Florida Museum of History Civil War hall instead. These are much more appropriate locations for all Floridians.
