Save our Greeter, Michael

Save our Greeter, Michael

The Issue

There is a proposed ordinance calling for street performers to be relegated to a limited geographical area in Laguna Beach. The ordinance is subtly aimed at our village greeter, Michael Minatoli, though he is not mentioned by name. Michael Minatoli stands at the corner of Brooks and PCH and waves at passers by. He welcomes visitors and locals alike to Laguna Beach with a smile, a dance, a twirl or a wave.

The proposed ordinance targets Michael, though not by name. The statement by Laguna Beach City Council states that “street performers” May cause drivers to become distracted and create a potential for traffic accidents. There is no direct evidence of this having happened on the corner Michael occupies. The ordinance further intimates that Michael ‘is acting as a Busker.’ Michael is not a Busker, nor has he ever had a hat or receptacle out on the sidewalk for money in the many years he’s been active in Laguna. He greets people because it makes him happy. Period.

The sidewalk Michael uses as his forum is wide, abuts a controlled intersection and is safe. Michael does not hinder traffic in either the roads or sidewalk. The proposed ordinance is mean spirited and unnecessary. Michael enhances our neighborhood and carries on the tradition of a Laguna Beach Greeter, which is over 100 years old.

Let’s join together to put a stop to this proposed ordinance and embrace our local community and it’s eclectic inhabitants.
