Lago Vista for a Pesticide-Free Future: Protect Our Families & Environment

Lago Vista for a Pesticide-Free Future: Protect Our Families & Environment
The Issue
We are calling on the City of Lago Vista to prioritize the health of residents, visitors, children, pets, and wildlife over outdated and hazardous pesticide practices.
Did You Know?
The City of Lago Vista routinely sprays playgrounds, parks, sports fields, and other public spaces with carcinogenic pesticides. This puts children, pets, and wildlife at risk every single day. Lago Vista is better than this, and for that reason, Councilmember Shane Saum and Resident Michelle Varela have taken a stand, bringing this urgent public health issue to the city council agenda.
“Pregnant women, infants, and young children are especially vulnerable to synthetic pesticides. Even extremely low-dose exposures during early development can cause lasting damage. By protecting them, we preserve the health of all.”
— Philip J. Landrigan, MD, MSc, FAAP, Non-Toxic Neighborhoods' Advisor
The Facts:
- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) confirms glyphosate harms or kills 93% of endangered species and destroys 96% of their critical habitat.
- Residents are unknowingly exposed to toxic pesticides in public spaces—unlike a prescribed medication where risks are disclosed.
- Lago Vista should not be using public funds to spray known carcinogens for cosmetic weed control—especially when safer, cost-effective alternatives exist.
A Safer, Smarter Approach
Lago Vista must transition to proven, fiscally responsible organic and regenerative land management—a solution that protects public health, enhances property values, and safeguards our natural resources. Other cities have already adopted these safer, more sustainable practices, proving that public spaces can be maintained beautifully—without toxic chemicals.
“If Lago Vista is truly committed to protecting its community, we must embrace safer, sustainable solutions. We know better—now it’s time to do better.”
Take Action Now
Sign this petition to demand that Lago Vista immediately stop using public funds to poison our parks, schools, and gathering spaces. Pesticides may be invisible after application, but their harmful effects last for generations. It’s time to put health and safety first and end unnecessary, dangerous chemical exposure in our community.
Lago Vista deserves better. Let’s ensure our city leads with health, safety, and sustainability for generations to come. Sign and share today!
