Why this petition matters

Started by Samantha Pfeifer

In 1996, Lafayette Parish enacted a parish-wide ban on all video poker machines. Video poker generates millions of dollars in revenue which is taxed by the state and then goes into a parish general fund. This general fund is directly funded by video poker proceeds. The fund is used for all types of improvements to the city, but the majority goes maintain and improve the public school system, which the citizens of Lafayette Parish can greatly benefit from. Video poker is legal in parishes near Lafayette which causes our citizens to take their money and spend it in other parishes to be sent off and used in that parishes general fund. I hope to legalize video poker in restaurants, truck stops, and bars to keep the citizens of Lafayette Parishes money in our parish and generate money improve the Lafayette public school system to make sure students receive a quality education.
