The Issue

TO OUR FELLOW UNION MEMBERS: SIGN THIS PETITION TO CALL ON OUR LEADERS TO FIGHT FOR DEMOCRACY.

American workers are facing the gravest threat to democracy and the labor movement since the Civil War. This is not alarmism — it is a clear-eyed assessment of the moment we are in.

In recent years, former President Donald Trump and his political allies have:

Undermined the principle of solidarity by promoting selfishness, division, and bigotry in place of unity and mutual respect;

Rejected truth, science, and fact-based thinking, replacing them with deliberate falsehoods and conspiracy theories;

Elevated open fascists and Christian nationalists, such as Stephen Miller and Project 2025 architect Russell Vought, to positions of influence;

Inspired a movement that includes individuals who celebrate Adolf Hitler and embrace authoritarian ideologies;

Turned a major political party into a personal cult of power and vengeance;

Abused the justice system to target political opponents, labor activists, and the vulnerable;

Aligned with dictators and war criminals like Vladimir Putin and Benjamin Netanyahu;

Empowered a Supreme Court that consistently sides with corporate power over working people;

Accelerated deportations and persecution of immigrants and refugees;

Empowered extremist billionaires intent on dismantling the public sector and destroying collective bargaining rights;

Deepened racial, gender, and class divisions to weaken working-class unity;

And now, moved toward open repression, using ICE and the National Guard to invade our cities, attack civilians, and arrest thousands — a step toward martial law.

These are not isolated events. They are part of a coordinated agenda — Project 2025 — that seeks to dismantle the labor movement, strip away democratic rights, and impose corporate and authoritarian control over every sector of society.

What We Must Do
As union members, we know that silence and passivity in moments like this carry a heavy price. The labor movement has always been strongest when it has stood not only for its own members, but for all working and oppressed people.

We therefore call upon all unions, their leaders, and every rank-and-file member to take action:

Launch a member education campaign to inform workers about the dangers posed by Trump and Project 2025 to labor rights and democracy.

Publish and share clear materials on union websites, newsletters, and social media to expose this threat and rally solidarity across industries.

Hold union meetings and forums where members can discuss what is at stake and how to respond collectively.

Organize a national day of worker action — on a workday — led by unions, to demonstrate our unity and determination to defend democracy, dignity, and solidarity.

Why We Must Act
As Pastor Martin Niemöller warned after the rise of fascism:

First they came for the Communists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Communist.

Then they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak out for me.

We cannot wait until it is too late. The labor movement must stand once again as the conscience and defender of democracy in America.

In solidarity,

We, the Undersigned Union Members
