Label Xylitol Loudly: Protect Dogs from Hidden Dangers

Label Xylitol Loudly: Protect Dogs from Hidden Dangers
The Issue
🐶 Why This Matters:
Xylitol is a common sugar substitute found in thousands of everyday items — including gum, candy, baked goods, toothpaste, mints, and even peanut butter. It’s safe for humans — but can be extremely toxic to dogs. Even a small amount can lead to seizures, liver failure, or death.
Most people have never even heard of xylitol. Even fewer know it’s fatal to pets. And to make matters worse, xylitol is often buried in the fine print of ingredients lists, without any warning about its danger to animals.
I know this because I lost my dog Sully due to unintentional exposure. There was no warning on the label. No bold print. No chance to stop what happened.
That’s why I’m starting this petition — to demand mandatory, front-of-package warning labels on all products containing xylitol.
📢 What We’re Demanding:
Clear, bold labeling of “Contains Xylitol” on the front of any product that includes it.
A pet safety warning (e.g., “Xylitol is toxic to dogs”) included near the ingredient list.
Public education campaigns to inform pet owners about the dangers of xylitol.
Accountability from food and product manufacturers to prioritize pet safety in their labeling practices.
🧾 Who We’re Addressing:
U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA)
Consumer packaged goods companies and manufacturers
Major grocery and retail chains
State legislators and consumer safety regulators
🐕 Why It’s Personal:
Sully was more than a pet. He was my companion, my joy, my family. Losing him was devastating — and preventable. I’m sharing my story in hopes no one else has to go through what I did.
