LA28 Breaking Olympics

The Issue

**Petition to Reinstate Breakin’ in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics**

To: The International Olympic Committee, LA 28 Olympics Committee Mayor Karen Bass, and the Ad Hoc Committee on the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics Games

We, the undersigned, urge you to reverse the decision to cut ‘Breaking Dance Sport’ from the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. This decision is not just about a sport; it’s about equity, representation, and honoring cultural heritage.

Breaking Dance Sport, known as Breaking, was born in the streets and communities of America… and has since become a global phenomenon, representing creativity, resilience, and the spirit of youth. It is more than just a dance; it is a powerful form of expression that has been embraced by diverse communities, especially people of color.

By removing Breaking from the 2028 Olympic lineup, we are missing a vital opportunity to celebrate a sport that is deeply rooted in the cultural fabric of Los Angeles. This decision marginalizes the voices and desires of the very community that gave birth to this sport.

Furthermore, replacing Breaking with sports that predominantly cater to wealthier, predominantly White communities undermines the inclusive spirit of the Olympics. It reinforces elitist and classist systems that exclude underrepresented groups from the global stage.

Break Dancing made its iconic Olympic debut in 1984 in Los Angeles, capturing the world’s attention and inspiring countless individuals. Its inclusion in the 2024 Paris Olympics marks a historic moment for the sport and its community. To cut it from the 2028 games in its birthplace is not only a disservice to its rich history but also to the values of diversity and inclusion that the Olympics strive to uphold.

We believe that the Olympic Games should reflect the diverse passions and interests of the global community. By reinstating Breaking Dance Sport for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, we honor its origins, celebrate its global impact, and provide a platform for young people from all backgrounds to shine.

We respectfully ask that you reconsider this decision and take a stand for equity, representation, and cultural heritage. Bring back Breaking Dance Sport to the 2028 Olympics and let Los Angeles once again be the stage for this incredible sport. #BreakingDanceSport

Sincerely,
