Dear supporters and fellow campaigners,
I hope you are healthy.
A Spanish bullfighting club has submitted an application to UNESCO to declare bullfighting as a World Heritage Site. In the case mentioned, however, it was not a regular application. Spain did not submit such a request. Rather, it was just a request by letter from a bullfighting club in Spain asking for admission. This request was denied.
There is no official statement from UNESCO because regular applications can only be submitted by contracting states. These can then be viewed on www.unesco.org, assessed according to appropriate criteria and then dealt with and decided by the intergovernmental committee.
It meets once a year and is broadcast completely live on the network. In this case, it is an irregular request that has no meaning.
The only official statement on this was made by PETA. Read here (English, please use Google Translator for translation): https://www.peta.org.uk/blog/unesco-bullfighting/
So much for UNESCO.
This petition will be handed over as an EU petition in Brussels in January, at the latest in February. I am in contact with the EU Committee on Petitions and am waiting for relevant information.
The creators of another petition will kindly join me with significantly more signatures than in my petition. The petition is called: Govern de les Illes Balears: Stoppen Sie sofort die barbarischen Stierkämpfe auf Mallorca.
According to the current status, there would then be a bit over 100,000 signatures.
UNTIL THE EU-PETITION IS HAND-OVER, I ASK TO CONTINUE TO SHARE AND, IF THAT HAS NOT BEEN DONE, TO SIGN. THANKS A LOT!
As soon as I have news I will keep you informed.
Until then, I wish you a nice and, hopefully not too limited, happy new year 2021.
Kind regards,
Hans Joachim Richter
