The bullfight is to be declared as a World Heritage Site. I am using a text, that is translated from the original Text of the German Robert Gabel, Member from The Party “Mensch Umwelt Tierschutz in European Parliament:
The "International Bullfighting Association" has officially submitted the application to UNESCO for bullfighting to be declared as a world cultural heritage.
Such brutalities actually contradict the basic moral values of UNESCO, which as a sub-organization of the United Nations is responsible for international cooperation, education and culture. But the prospects are good that the application will be approved by the World Heritage Committee at its meeting in October. Bullfighting would then be officially a World Heritage Site along with many other monuments, buildings, traditions and works of art!
That would make a ban on bullfighting, for which animal rights activists have been campaigning for many years, as good as impossible!
Anja Hazekamp is President of the Animal Welfare Intergroup in the European Parliament and will soon try again to get rid of the unspeakable EU subsidies for bullfighting.
Hopefully both initiatives will succeed. And then the way to a bullfighting ban is more promising than ever before!
Francisco Guerreiro, who was elected to the European Parliament for the Portuguese Animal Welfare Party, has therefore written a letter to UNESCO and 60 other European parliamentarians have signed it.
