Jerome “Dwight” Bergeron has been in prison for 26 years for a crime that never occurred.
During a marital separation, Dwight’s four children were allowed to live with relatives. The relatives then attempted to adopt-out the children to benefit friends. This was done without Dwight’s knowledge or consent.
When Dwight contested the illegal ‘adoptions’ he was threatened. However, he continued to fight for his children. At that point, he was accused of sexual abuse of the children, a charge never made before, by anyone, for any reason, at any time.
The children, then 1, 3, 4 and 5, were coerced and coached nearly two dozen times each by parents, social services and various law enforcement personnel.
The children were interviewed without video, and the interviews were conducted without safeguards to ensure that their ‘memory’ is not influenced or created by the interviewers.
Yet, without physical, circumstantial or forensic evidence that a crime had even been committed (much less that Dwight committed the crime), and without witnesses except three, coached children under seven years old, Dwight was convicted and sentenced to three life terms. Dwight’s trial lasted two days - including jury deliberations.                                                                                                         Such is justice in LaFourche Parish, deep within Louisiana bayou country.
One of Dwight’s children, Rebecca, was fearful of testifying. One reason, she said, was that she “might not remember the big words for the bad things” she had been taught by the perpetrators.                                                                                   Within months after the trial, Rebecca recanted her statements. She had never been abused in any way by her father; but was used by people who wanted children. When she was old enough to do so, Rebecca began actively campaigning for the release of her father, and has fought on his behalf for decades.
In the notorious Louisiana State Penitentiary, Angola, Dwight has earned his college degree as a Landscaping Horticulture Contractor along with many certifications.
