Here is the latest update with Los Angeles County Animal Control. They are still only partially re-opened but now they are killing animals as fast as they enter the pound. They still require appointments for 1/2 their normal business office hours and still have not updated their website or phone messages to reflect that the general public can simply go to the pound and not have an appointment.

Now that Los Angeles County Board of Supervisor meetings are taking place again, I'm planning on attending and speaking during public comments until the animal pounds fully re-open. If anyone wants to attend with me and speak during Public Comment, please text me at 213-948-3165. I think we might benefit from organizing our comments and requests of the Board. The next scheduled meeting is August 30th, 2022 at 9:30 AM. I plan to arrive at least 1 hour early to make sure my public comment card is turned in early. I'm familiar with Public Commenting in other cities and counties but if anyone has experience with Los Angeles County Public Commenting, please text me at 213-948-3165. I'd like a brief introduction to how they handle public commenting...the do's and do nots would be beneficial to me(us) going in. I'm planning on starting to attend all the meetings I can to get the animal pounds fully re-opened and would love as many of us to attend as possible.

Here is a plea from a local animal rescue advocating to save Brownie.  If anyone can help save this dog's life, we need you to step in now.

Dear Downey/LA County,

I just received a 72 hour notice for a dog listed as a senior chow mix who just came in on 8/22 and seems to have okay behavior based on notes I am attaching. The medical notes you provided for him and his ID show some notes for a newborn kitten coupled with some notes for the dog. Therefore, there is an obvious mistake here.  Therefore, I am also wondering if this 72 hour notice is also a total mistake?  The dog just came in and there have been no prior emails, and what reason is there to rush to euthanize him?  He is a gorgeous dog that seems calm.

Please do not euthanize this dog, your own notes say placement is pending a handling assessment. I am unclear if he why he was an owner surrender, but would appreciate more information and clarification here.  Please give adequate information and time to network him for a safe outlet.

Thanks, Robin

NEW ASSESSMENT

DOWNEY

A5498932

Brownie was laying down at the front of the kennel as the runner approached. The runner called to Brownie and he was

startled by the runner and got up quickly moving away from the runner. Brownie presented a neutral body, low neutral tail

with no wag, closed mouth, natural ears and wide soft eyes. The runner used gentle verbal coaxing and Brownie maintained

some distance but sniffed towards the runner from afar. The handler stepped into the kennel and presented their leash,

Brownie approached briefly sniffing the leash. The handler then placed the leash on Brownie, and he was easily removed

from the kennel without incident. While on the leash Brownie walks beside the handler with no pull on the leash bypassing

the dogs along the way. When passing by vocal dogs Brownie would press his body against the runner's legs. In the catch

pen Brownie was collared and leashed slowly and without incident. Brownie did not greet the dogs at the barrier displaying

no interest in them and was allowed into the yard. Once in the yard Brownie tolerated the dogs sniffing him and he quickly

broke away from the group to explore the yard. Brownie maintained his distance from the high energy dogs preferring to

keep to himself or stay by the calm dogs in the yard. Brownie didn't engage in play displaying low energy and wandered the

yard. Placement pending handling assessment.
