The city of San Marcos is getting involved in a city of Kyle decision on whether or not to bring a truck stop in the area of Interstate 35 and Yarrington Road, on the border of the two cities. On Tuesday night, Mayor Daniel Guerrero of San Marcos wrote a letter to Kyle Mayor Todd Webster in opposition to an agenda item on the Planning and Zoning Commission’s meeting. The agenda item was an application request from PGI Investment, LLC to convert their 47 acre agriculture property into a warehouse district that would be home to the new truck stop. The San Marcos mayor said the city council “did not find it to be conducive to a positive partnership and regional relationship.” He added that the council similarly opposed the truck stop when it came up in 2013, anticipating a new opposition resolution to be passed unanimously. San Marcos’ argument is that they have spent millions investing in the area, and that the truck stop would go against their vision, which includes “high quality development” and a possible high-end mall. Howard Kootz, the City of Kyle’s Director of Planning and Community Development, says this is the fourth time the company has tried to bring a truck stop to the area. The first proposal came in 2012. On Tuesday night, it was a 5-2 vote to deny the request for a land use change. Kootz says two of those who were open to the change were also open to the possibility of the company using the space for a number of things, like a shopping mall. Because this is the fourth time and knowing the company’s intentions, other commissioners were not convinced. Ultimately, the final decision will rely upon the city council’s vote on February 2. Please sign to show your opposition of the warehouse zoning request and the development of this truck stop. It is important to show up to the City Council meeting on February 2, 2016 if you can make it. Physical appearance means everything to the council, and your voice will help show the council that this land being zoned to W is not ideal for Kyle, with an impending Truck Stop and other questionable businesses on the way.
