Restoring the Great Northern to its former glory would do more than anything to revitalise the Newcastle CBD’s heart and soul and reverse the heritage decay that has set into our city after the earthquake.
If the ballroom is restored and re-opened upstairs hundreds of residents would be booking it for special occasions and functions. Visitors from across the globe will come back to Newcastle to stay in the grand old pub.
Treating the GNH with the respect she deserves will reinforce the heritage revival in the CBD.
Even if you cannot secure funding to renovate the 80+ hotel rooms on the upper floors, you could at least begin with restorations of the upstairs ballroom. Such a move will allow the community to flood back in and show its support.

Kurt, you have been promising that renovations would begin 'soon' for so long, that this is beginning to look like a case of ‘demolition by neglect’. So much rainwater is leaking into the building now, that as you would be aware, if restorations do not begin immediately, it will soon be too late.
Demolition by neglect - Allowing buildings to become unstable or uninhabitable in order to easily gain demolition approval, contravening the requirements as set out by the Heritage Council of NSW. The GNH is currently a state-listed property due to its major historical significance to the state of NSW.
Maintain and restore the GNH now, or sell it to one of the many people who love the hotel and have the capital ready to take this project on with respect to its heritage status.
Being a Sydney resident is no excuse, Kurt. You have owned the hotel for long enough to know what it means to the people of Newcastle.
