BREAKING: BOCA parent Kraft Heinz is investing in animal-free dairy cheese--which uses the dairy protein casein, produced through fermentation instead of by cows. Could change be on the horizon for its BOCA brand too? TAKE ACTION: Reply to Kraft Heinz’ latest tweet asking whether they’ll plan to phase out cow’s milk from the BOCA brand next!
Kraft Heinz’ venture fund, Evolv Ventures, led a $3.5 million seed funding round for New Culture, which says it’s “developing the technology to make [dairy] casein micelles without involving animals in the process.” The company uses fermentation and plant-derived ingredients to create cheeses that are just like those from cow’s milk--minus one major ingredient: cruelty.
Today, Kraft Heinz tweeted, “We're making a bold move to grow a new culture of cheese.” This innovative step truly marks a major departure from the company’s long history of traditional cheese-making. And with cow’s milk sales curdling, it’s not surprising that the dairy giant is now scrambling to “ketchup” with more innovative competitors through this game-changing investment.
But despite the fact that ditching dairy would ‘behoof’ cows as well as consumers looking for vegan products, Kraft’s BOCA brand is still clinging to cruel dairy in its All-American burger, as well as its bowls and skillet meals. Yet Kraft Heinz knows that consumers’ taste for BOCA is souring, with the CEO recently stating that “the company ... had the first plant-based burger, the Boca burger, but [finds itself] far behind the plant-based market today.”
Meanwhile, fully plant-based competitors are dominating the headlines, debuting at chains like Burger King and Hardee’s. And even older BOCA competitors like MorningStar Farms and Lightlife are dropping all animal ingredients.
