Galway County Council retract letter sent to EY consulting about Western Rail Corridor

The Issue

On July 17th Gerard Mullarkey acting interim chief executive of Galway county council sent a letter by email to EY Consulting.  The letter claimed to represent the views of Galway county council. The letter was not debated and agreed by the council and yet related to a very important issue about which there is a great deal of public debate in Galway. The letter was in relation to an impartial independent review of the closed railway running from Athenry to Claremorris being conducted by EY Consulting.  Mr Mullarkey expressed views in the letter purporting to be those of the council without this important issue being  debated by the council.  Mr Mullarkey's submission on behalf of the council was one sided and would fail any test of impartiality; the letter gave the impression that Galway county council only considers the option of re-opening the closed railway it made no mention of the fact that there is substantial support in Galway for a greenway on the closed railway until such time as a railway might be possible and this view has strong support among county council members. The letter sent by Mr Mullarkey must be rescinded and a public apology issued in regard to it being issued. This must be done immediately.
