Cyrus Smith started this petition to Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand and

People have tested things on animals for centuries. Even today, we test on millions of animals. While it usually works for testing products, there are many flaws with it. First, the animals we test on, while similar to humans, are not the same, so some minor differences in biology might affect test results. Second, the tests we use can be very painful for animals. One of the most common tests, the Draize test, can irritate and harm animals' eyes. While we have not found a full replacement for animal testing, we have found many possible alternatives to possibly be used in unison with each other or animal testing to lessen the number of animals we harm in testing.

One of these alternatives, in vitro testing, involves growing systems mimicking human organs on a chip and testing the drug's effect on those, however, it does not need or have blood, so the effects of it may not be completely uncovered. Another possible alternative, in silico testing, involves comparing the drug being tested to other known drugs, and based on those connections simulating the human body's reaction to it in a computer generated simulation.

It is true that animal testing cannot yet be fully replaced, however a bill requiring researchers to try other methods before animal testing could really help.
