On Some old Maps this Entire region is known as ELMET (elfed)

In some previous updates & material I was talking about the place name Helme being used both for "Dun Elm" at Meltham & for "Upper Helme" the name written by the Top of the Brig House hill/roundwood.

I talked about the Terms & interpretation for Elm, Helmet & the Ships Helm.

Its clear those names have a much further reaching influence & recognition, in fact to the entire county. Therefore The place must have been important. the Whole Huddersfield region.

The Book of Kells (800-900Ad)  pictures a religious character with a head or helmet shaped like the hill fort at Helme, and also outstretched arms over a long barrow elongation, with several smaller mounds or hillforts in its arms. not unlike the later drawings of religious figures holding models of churches.

It could even be symbolic of reaching out to the order from further afield such as Ireland where the book is supposed to originate from prior to the 1066 invasion. The chin on the character almost is fitting to the earthworks gap at castle hill, although they are said to be later than 1066.
