Don't cut the music centre budget
The Issue
Kirklees music centres are providing an amazing opportunity for musicians and have been for a number of years. Playing within an ensemble helps expand the musical knowledge and experience for musicians of all abilities, it is a priceless skill for musicians, amateur or otherwise. By cutting the budget Kirklees council are depriving a musical community of vital skills which will aid their playing.
One of the affected music centres would be Colne Valley Music centre. I am proud to say I am a part of this outstanding music centre and the things I have learnt through playing in an ensemble cant be taught. This music centre has a long history and has become a prominent part in my life, and all those who participate. Based at Colne Valley High school, this centre provides opportunities for musicians in Marsden, Cowlersley, Linthwaite and the surrounding areas. A moderately large centre with a range of groups and ensembles. The people I have met through this centre are extremely talented and have impacted on me more than I wish to say. It resembles a second family to me, I couldn't imagine my life without them. By cutting the budget Kirklees council are destroying families of musicians. Is this acceptable?
Through this petition I hope that Kirklees council decide to reconsider their intentions. Music centres are a precious opportunity and without them the generations of musicians who come and go through them would not be the same as they are today. I cannot imagine my life without the music I play on a Friday evening, the thought is unbearable.
