Abolish KCLSU's Safe Space Policy
The Issue
Regarding the activities of KCLSU ratified societies and those taking place in KCLSU spaces, this policy expressly prohibits :
"intimidation or harassment, resulting from prejudice or discrimination on the grounds of age, disability, marital or maternity/paternity status, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, gender identity, trans status, socio-economic status, or ideology or culture, or any other form of distinction."
Far from providing an 'inclusive and supportive space for all students', these regulations unfairly and dangerously equate 'discriminatory' speech, (e.g: criticism of particular ideologies), with 'intimidation' &/or 'harassment'.
This not only creates a hostile environment for the free discussion of events & ideas, but leaves wide open the possibility of arbitrary persecution of individuals and groups deemed to violate these terms.
Particularly, for an organisation that exists primarily for the purpose of safeguarding the interests of students and is partly funded by our tuition fees- we deem these regulations to be completely unacceptable. Not to mention, the irony and inefficiency of an organisation, channelling financial and human resources, into efforts that can only damage its reputation in the long-term.
Here's to maintaining King's College London's reputation as one of intellectual diversity and excellence!
