Kinew: Reverse Decision to Mine Hollow Water First Nation: No Consent, No Mine

The Issue

This petition is to express our disgust at your decision to allow silica sand mining near Hollow Water First Nation against the community’s wishes.

Their land was taken away for a park, gold mine, and cottage developments. This land was what was left and now that will be taken away too. It would be very nice if Manitobans came out in support of the community.

Kinew, you were supposed to finally recognize Indigenous nations’ right to free, prior, informed consent. This must include consultation with all First Nations members, as in this case the leaders are corrupt and signed a Participation Agreement for 250,000 up front without community consultation. Band members were separated into groups - divide and conquer so who knows what the final report was based upon. Community members were denied the opportunity to listen to each other. The community started the first day with the RCMP who stayed for six weeks because they were seen as criminals. The community has been threatened to keep silent so want to help them regain their voice.

This project will expose Hollow Water, Seymourville, and Selkirk to toxic silica laced air. A toxin known to shave years of average life expectancies. It also risks destroying access to food, water, and culture for Hollow Water and beyond.

As Premier and as the Minister of Indigenous Relations you need to reverse this decision and enshrine the right to free, prior, informed consent into Manitoban law. This decision is a decision that reflects your integrity as someone who claims to care about First Nations peoples.

This is Manitoba’s Wet’suet’en and will continue to have significant resistance.

Resistance is being led by Camp Morningstar:
