LIU Post should postpone graduation instead of doing a virtual commencement!
The Issue
Due to recent circumstances beyond anyone’s control (Covid-19), Long Island University has decided to move graduation to a virtual commencement. While we acknowledge the decision that it is unsafe to hold the ceremony, we also believe we should postpone it to a later time. The situation is unpredictable but we are willing to wait as long as it takes to clear up in order to celebrate the right way, even if it’s another semester or two from now. The graduating class has had the rug swept out from under us by having our last months of college ended early, graduation shouldn’t be another thing we don’t get to have. Our four years of late nights spent studying, getting up for 8 am classes, crying from the stress of our work load, meeting friends and professors who have changed our lives, learning our potential and making our parents proud is too much to be celebrated by sitting in front of our computers. Not to mention the high cost of attending this private school. The last 16 years of our academic life leads up to the moment we get to walk across stage and accept our award for our hard work and dedication. If Long Island University truly cares about us, maybe they will reconsider and give us the option of another date in the future when conditions are acceptable.
