The commercial sale of animals on Kijiji is now being tackled from all sides: at the corporate level, at the provincial level and at the federal level.
On one side, over 355,000 people are asking Kijiji Canada to ban the commercial sale of animals and instead promote adoption on its site, through this Change.org petition. Animal welfare organizations, comments from signers and media coverage over the years demonstrate that too many buyers continue to be cheated by unscrupulous breeders on classified ad sites while too many animals suffering from health problems, often due to breeding and rearing conditions, are sold on these sites, perpetuating veterinary costs to new owners and inflicting unnecessary stress on them.
On another side, a petition asking the Government of Quebec to prohibit the commercial sale of animals on online classified sites in Quebec was presented to the National Assembly of Quebec on May 26, 2020. The Quebec Committee on Agriculture, Fisheries, Energy and Natural Resources has until September 29, 2020 to take up this petition during its working session.
And finally, on another side, there is currently a petition calling upon the Government of Canada to ban the sale of animals through online classified websites like Kijiji and other social media platforms.
The recent mass importation of dogs into the Toronto International Airport has highlighted a major hole in the Canadian system for monitoring the commercial sales of animals. The international aspect to this trade lends it to two major problems, outsourcing puppy mills to foreign countries and in a world of zoonotic diseases, the international trade in pet animals represents a great risk to both human and companion animal health. A quick search of the major classified websites show a collection of animals both legal and illegal for sale, with minimal oversight by federal agencies. Click here to sign this petition.
