The issue

Save Werri Lagoon, Rose Valley and the Kiama Municipality from the environmental threat of an abattoir and revolving, which could result in further pollution of the already "sensitive" Werri Lagoon, waterways and land in this unique and iconic scenic landmark. Rose Valley is a biodiversity corridor, where cattle graze; people live, work and relax; children play, tourists visit and native birds and animals abound.

The 2011 Local Environment Plan (LEP) was put together with extensive public consultation and it was decided to allow many agricultural businesses, but not to include "livestock processing industry ". The ONE and ONLY facility specifically listed as not consented in the Kiama LEP is a "livestock processing industry" or ABATTOIR! Why have the Council ignored their own LEP?

We must urge Council to uphold the LEP and not amend it for one commercial interest against the voice of the people. Why have an LEP if "ad-hoc" changes can be made?  Amending  the (LEP) could set a precedent allowing other prohibited "livestock processing" facilities anywhere in the Municipality. Is that what we want? Why amend the LEP to allow for an industrial, commercial and retail outlet in Rose Valley, with the inherent risks of polluting the prime agricultural land in Rose Valley, which has soil quality in the top 3% in the Australia? Why further pollute the waterways feeding into Werri Lagoon, already listed as "sensitive" by the State Government and home to two Endangered Ecological Communities. Why allow one commercial interest to overrule the LEP and threaten an ecosystem that is already polluted and stressed?

The Kiama Community stood with Council to stay independent against forced amalgamation with Shoalhaven Council. The points of difference about our Municipality, were stated in part, as the importance of our rural areas and environmental uniqueness, which we protect. This should be respected and protected now or we will be just like the Shoalhaven where abattoirs are allowed.

The term "Rural Landscape" sends a message. Changing the allowable uses to support one landowner sends another.

Please support us and show Kiama Council we want environmental protection and social justice. Do not not allow this to happen to beautiful Werri Lagoon and Rose Valley. We do not want our prime agricultural land and waterways further polluted.

We urge the Councillors to uphold the LEP by rejecting this planning proposal and to make the protection of Werri Lagoon, Rose Valley and all residents in their municipality, a hallmark of their term. Sign this petition now and join us in this movement to save our and future generations, from environmental pollution and social injustice in our Community.
