Keep Tilghman Elementary School from Closing

The Talbot County Board of Education’s 2017 Educational Facilities Master Plan was discussed at their July board meeting and it lists closing Tilghman Elementary School as a consideration.  If the Board of Education decides to take action it would be devastating to our children and the entire community.

To the folks that live here this is more than a place where our children learn.  It’s the heart of our community, it’s where the cafeteria is filled with families supporting PTO events and school functions, it’s a location for the Tilghman Area Youth Association to provide afterschool programs for our children, it’s a draw for young families to come, stay and raise their children.  If closed, this would threaten the well-being of our community.

Tilghman Island does not need a vacant school building.  Based on the Board of Education’s 2017-2018 Comprehensive Maintenance Plan this school is in superior condition, the highest grading available in the plan.  It would be a waste of county dollars to desert a perfectly useful building and overcrowd St. Michaels Elementary School.  The increased class sizes at St. Michaels Elementary School would then put that school at 99% utilization!  Then what . . . portable classrooms, redistrict St. Michaels students to Easton . . . ?!?  These are just a few concerns, they are valid and could have a negative impact on our childrens’ education.

Tilghman Elementary School provides top-notch educators and currently staffs Talbot County’s Teacher of the Year, who is also a candidate for Maryland State Teacher of the Year.  It proudly boasts that it was named 2007-2008 School of the Year.  This school has also been recognized for its high attendance rates and student performance.  They are doing everything right, let’s not end that.

We're asking for your support to keep Tilghman Elementary School opened.  This school is not only important for our children but for the vitality and sustainability of our community.
