Kewaunee County Animal Lovers Unite!

The 10-week-old kittens that the neighbors kicked out of their house were lucky: they were surrounded by animal lovers who promptly scooped them up and delivered them to the local rescue. They were adopted within days.

Up the hill, the family moved and left their cat behind. The people who live downstairs provide her with shelter, food and water, which the cat accepts. They offer her love, too, but the cat cannot risk that again: people lie about love. Of course, the cat has become the cats. She has six surviving kittens from two litters (so far), and while it would be awesome to get them all spayed or neutered and evaluated for adoption or release, there is no help for abandoned cats in Kewaunee County.

In fact, there is little help for any lost or abandoned pets here. The lone rescue in the area, funded by the generosity of a local veterinarian and a few donors, is consistently overrun with need. Dogs pour into the vet clinic, scheduled for euthanasia because their owners can no longer care for them. Workers and volunteers intercept as many as they can, but they cannot save them all.

Human problems result in dog fatalities every week. Pet abandonment creates the feral cat population growing across Kewaunee County every year. These innocent animals deserve our protection.

A workgroup of concerned citizens is forming to insist that, at a minimum, the Kewaunee County Board establish a service contract with the Wisconsin Humane Society. Please vote, comment and share. Help us give voice to these animals and this need, and demonstrate to the Kewaunee County Board that the people demand a county-wide solution that prevents abandonment and protects pets.
