Under Armour: End Sponsorship of Hunter Cameron Hanes
The Issue
Recent weeks have seen a flurry of public outrage over trophy hunting. Many people were not aware that certain trophy hunters, such as Sarah Bowmar, had formal business relationships with Under Armour.
Under Armour did the right thing from a business and ethical perspective by severing its ties with Sarah Bowmar and clarifying that it has no business relationship with Josh Bowmar.
However, Under Armour continues to sponsor and promote Cameron Hanes, a well-known trophy hunter who has killed everything from Alaskan black bear to elk in Colorado, antelope, water buffalo, and more. Like other trophy hunters, Cameron Hanes is always sure to get a photo of him smiling with his fallen prey.
We are customers of Under Armour who purchase your apparel and shoes for sports like basketball, baseball, tennis, golf, football, yoga/fitness, and more. We purchase your fan apparel for sponsored teams like the University of Notre Dame, the University of Maryland, and more. We can not in good conscience continue our extensive Under Armour purchases until the company stops its promotion of trophy hunters. We know that hunters and hunting apparel represents a very small proportion of Under Armour's overall profits. We speak for the great majority of your customer base and source of profits in condemning trophy hunting (along with 74% of Americans). Our opinion is not swayed by whether or not the hunted meat is eaten, and most of us are either vegan, vegetarian, or ensure our food comes from 100% ethical sources. We want to make sure our sports apparel comes from an ethical source, too.
Under Armour did the right thing by cutting ties with Sarah Bowmar. We now ask that Under Armour show again that it is an ethical company that puts its sports apparel market ahead of its tiny market focused on killing animals. We look forward to hearing from Under Armour with assurance that it has cut ties with Cameron Hanes and is making progress in moving away from its trophy hunting sector. We look forward to returning to Under Armour as customers of a company that shows integrity and ethics. Thank you very much.
