With the recent PG&E shutdown, it became apparent that the Lantos Tunnels do not have a backup generator and there are no plans to install one. The tunnels cannot be open without electricity.

It’s imperative that a backup generator is installed because the tunnels are a lifeline for thousands of Coastside residents. If electricity is not available after an earthquake or any other emergency, residents will be left in a desperate situation. There is also the major economic impact as it is part of a major north-south artery in San Mateo county.
