BYU's 3 pools and 2000 person spectator area located at the Richard's Building are being torn down and replaced due to the building's foundations failing inspection. The replacement, construction to begin in March, will consist of two pools and limited spectator space. This will simply not meet the needs of the many programs that use these facilities. The BYU Swim & Dive program utilizes the entire facility as it stands now and still needs more space. The team currently staggers practices because of limited space. A reduction in space and spectator seats will likely destroy the program and cut into the time that the facility can be used for other programs. Many other organizations and programs including intramural sports, adaptive swimming programs, the triathlon club, high school swimming and diving programs, and the BYU student body use these facilities. This new plan will just not cut it.
BYU's Swim & Dive program has made a positive name for itself over the last few decades, producing several Olympians and taking multiple conference championships. High school athletic programs all over Utah gather annually for their biggest meet, which fills the current facility to capacity. These are only a couple of examples that demonstrate the need for a larger facility, not a smaller one.
The current plan is to keep the facility within the current non-weight-bearing walls which will create less deck space, less spectator space, and less pool space. Due to the safety concern this plan poses, larger events would no longer be held at BYU. This would mean the high school state meet that draws thousands to our facility would be held elsewhere. The Richards' Building pool as is stands how was built for a student body half its current size. We need to expand to the weight bearing walls, not just for pool space but for the safety of all who use it. We need a fifty meter pool. We need a diving tower. We need the facility that was promised to us nearly 20 years ago.
We are calling on the BYU Administration to keep their word and provide the community, the BYU student body, and the Swim & Dive program a facility that meets their needs. Our goal is to allow those who will be most impacted by this decision to have a voice. We request full transparency and inclusion between the Administration and the coaching staff along with other groups such as team captains, recruits, triathlon and polo club leaders, and local high school and club coaches. If BYU will listen and include us in this process, we will feel that we have a fair say in the final design's creation.
