Business recycling at public malls and outlets

The Issue

We wish to create a policy in order to have a recycling option at public locations to increase participation in recycling, cans, paper, and plastics to better our environment.  Every year, the United States generates over 230 million tons of "trash".  This equates to about 4.6 pounds per person per day.  However, less than 1/4 of this trash is recycled.  Every ton of trash each of us throws out fills up three cubic yards of landfill space, and over sixty percent of this trash could be recycled and put to good use.  Recycling creates six times more jobs than landfilling waste. Recycling can only help our city, and eighty percent of our materials recycled within the city are used by local companies.  As a result, we felt it would be of great aid to our city if public malls and outlets created a recycling option not only for customers, but for workers as well.  Numerous mall workers stated that they throw out vast amounts of materials every day that could be recycled.  In addition, if they had the option or if the option was more convenient, they would recycle materials including: paper, plastics, glass, and cans.  We feel this could be extremely effective in terms of helping the environment, saving energy, reducing waste buried in landfills, and creating and retaining local jobs.  Help make a difference in our city today.  Change one city.  Influence the nation.
