161 Years of a Colonial Name Are Enough!

Lake Victoria is one of the ancient African Great Lakes - a series of lakes constituting the part of the Rift Valley lakes in and around the East African Rift. It is also the third-largest fresh water lake in the world by area. Lake Victoria supports the lives and livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of Africans and is the ancient home of great biodiversity - 10% of the world's fish species live there.

In 1858 a British man by the name of John Hanning Speke saw it and named it Lake Victoria after the British monarch of the day Queen Victoria - who led the British in their colonization Africa.  Since then the name stuck and became the official name published in school books and on maps that serve the world.

The time has come to Re-Name the lake.  As African people, we want the name changed back to its most commonly used African name - Lake Nyanza.  Or we want  the people to decide on the correct African name for the lake that reflects the African people and NOT the British monarch who colonized us.  Please join me in calling on the governments of Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya to re-name of the Great African Lake!   Thank you for your support!
