How many etexts have etext experiment participants bought? For my accounting, stats and communications courses last semester, I purchased Vitalsource editions, as well as WileyPlus editions (accounting); Coursemate edition (comms); and Connect (stats). These editions had more features and add-ons than Vitalsource. One caveat was they are online-only. The added features made studying helpful, and for some courses, quizzes from Connect and CourseMate were included in our grades. Certainly poses an ethical question whether students should be paying fees above their tuition fees for the privilege of having the school out-source grading student work. Until now, my tuitions always including the cost of grading and testing material. Also, if Vitalsource is so complete and superior, why is the school adding these other options to the etexts fees? Full disclosure, WileyPlus is an inspired product that really adds value to the etext experiment. Perhaps more transparency would help.
