OwlSwap Sustainability Initiative at Kennesaw State University started this petition to Kennesaw State University SGA and

The Kennesaw State University community is currently in the dark about working conditions in the factories producing clothes bearing the KSU logo. In October 2018, students were made aware that KSU was selling apparel made in factories that have severe and well-documented labor violations. Specifically, clothes produced by Vive La Fete, a company that was found guilty of abuse, harassment, and non-payment of wages. After students brought this to the university's attention, merchandise from Vive La Fete was no longer available for purchase. The only reason students found out about the conditions of Vive La Fete was that the University of Alabama is affiliated with the WRC and had sold Vive La Fete goods.

The Workers Rights Consortium (WRC) is a not-for-profit, independent, organization that provides a monitoring system to ensure that the apparel bearing university logos are not associated with labor and worker rights violations. Garment factories around the world are notorious for labor rights violations including, abuse and non-payment of wages. By affiliating with the WRC, KSU can make a strong statement that transparent engagement and human rights are valued at the University. KSU must take this seriously and ensure that the university apparel is made in just and equitable conditions.

The students of OwlSwap are asking the KSU community to use their voice in support of our campaign to have KSU affiliate with the WRC to ensure our apparel is not made in sweatshop conditions.

Affiliation is easy, the university just needs to do 3 things. Adopt an updated code of conduct, provide the WRC with lists of apparel companies that supply the university with products, and pay the annual fee of $1,500 or 1% of total apparel revenue. 173 colleges and universities have already affiliated with the WRC and not a single one in the University System of Georgia.

KSU could set the example and be the first! Emory and Spelman are affiliated as well as the University of Tennesee, Harvard, Yale and more.

Affiliation Would:
- Guarantee factories producing for KSU meet standards for safety, wages, and workers’ rights
- Create legally binding agreements between KSU and suppliers
- Ensure transparency and accountability for all factories producing KSU apparel

Forming a partnership with the WRC is forward progress to uphold the values Kennesaw State University claims to have.

"Embracing the true power of openness – valuing and leveraging diverse perspectives to find better solutions and gain an edge."

"Delivering a difference – impacting individuals and communities for positive change."

"Staying genuine, guided by honesty, intention, and purpose"

The students of OwlSwap want to feel proud to wear university apparel. We as a University need a transparent and ethical apparel supply chain. Please show support by signing this petition and passing it to students, alumni, faculty, staff, and other Kennesaw State University community members. Thank you.
