Retire Harold Thomas' Flag for a New Aboriginal Flag or Flags

Retire Harold Thomas' Flag for a New Aboriginal Flag or Flags
The issue
Harold Thomas' design for an Aboriginal flag has transitioned from something that was meaningful to Aboriginal people into a void space as a result of exploitation. It has lost its purpose and meaning for many Aboriginal people. As such this petition was created to lobby the Australian Government, more specifically Ken Wyatt - Minister for Indigenous Affairs to retire Harold Thomas' flag in place of a new Aboriginal flag or flags.
We want all our nations, our tribes and our families to have a conversation to define what we want. We want consensus on a new flag or flags that is able to fairly and honestly represent Aboriginal people without exploitation. One that is able to support our journey forward in the collective task of the Sovereign Peoples Treaty. We need a flag that can honour our Ancestors self-determination and their resistance and struggle enabling us the power to rise.
- There is now a campaign for Aboriginal flags to be held upside down throughout NAIDOC week activities and a plan for the flag to be retired and replaced completely on Australia Day (January 26) 2020.
- The protocol around retiring a flag includes burning the flag in a respectful manner until it turns to ashes (as shown within the article: https://www.welcometocountry.org/aboriginal-flags-burnt-for-a-new-flag/ ).
- Harold Thomas' has made himself crystal clear during a shocking interview with CAAMA where he asserts the Aboriginal flag belongs to him. And it is true he holds the copyrights for his Aboriginal flag design, whilst he also maintaining licensing agreements. But as a result of Harold's actions, in exercising his power and control, he has not protected Aboriginal people but exposed us to exploitation. Outrageous!!
The time is now for change. If you support this change, in light of the outrageous exploitation of Aboriginal people, please sign so we can support the talks in community for change and retire Harold Thomas' flag as proposed by our nations, our tribes and our families.
