In the future, I want to see the ocean filled with flourishing wildlife that can be appreciated by oncoming generations. However, at the pace we produce plastic waste, people's health and the wildlife around us will continue to suffer unless we manage to stop it. How does it affect me or my children? According to a plastic study done by Arizona State University Biodesign, "Toxic chemicals leach out of plastic and are found in the blood and tissue of nearly all of us. Exposure to them is linked to cancers, birth defects, impaired immunity, endocrine disruption and other ailments." These plastic bags are not worth any health problems.

Last year thousands of people worldwide demonstrated their distress about the environmental policies the government has overlooked in safeguarding the future. Americans go through 142 billion straws a year, and 1 million bags are used every minute, while it’s use usually spans 15 minutes. Waste like this hurts not only our own health but wildlife habitats as well. This is the only earth we have. It is time to stop neglecting our duties and time to take action to reach a sustainable future. In 2014 alone, 5 trillion pieces of plastic waste were found floating in the World’s oceans! What sort of future are we leaving behind for upcoming generations?

By transitioning to reusable bags, a huge amount of plastic pollution can be cut out of our ecological footprint. We all need to strive towards ethical and moral investments one purchase at a time. The environment has suffered enough from our mistakes. We need to turn this culture around and push producers/ consumers to switch to bio-degradable bags or reusable bags- if not they can be charged a dime or so per bag. This little tax will cut down plastic bag consumption and encourage people to bring their own bags.

Let us be a part of the oncoming change that will create a better world for generations to come! NYC has recently done it, why not be the next?
