Keeping languages in Salem-Keizer Public Schools

Keeping languages in Salem-Keizer Public Schools

The Issue

UPDATE!!

With recent news, we just figured out that Mme. B will not be reassigned to another school and will stay at West! It is still up in the air with the French program to our knowledge here at West but she will be a part of the clubs she is running this year.

I want to thank everyone who signed this petition in support of our school, teachers, and programs here at West and I would also like to thank Jared for coming up with this idea to help raise awareness, Miguel for helping, and Rebekah for helping initially spreading the word to others to get signatures!

Thank you again :)

Because of a lack of funds. In West Salem High School, the French, German (recent information has led to a revision and German will likely be offered next school year) other programs have been removed from West and throughout the district.

We, as students want to have diversity in the programs provided by the school because languages are important for students to be aware of and shouldn’t be restricted to a select choice of two non-Spanish foreign languages because the principal and district say so. We understand that Spanish is the second most spoken language in America, however, American students want more choices in the languages and programs offered by their public schools. The non-Spanish speaking language programs at West make the student body a more diverse place.

“About 1,600 Salem-Keizer School District employees received either a pink slip or job reassignment by email Friday morning” Statesman Journal That amounts to 31% of the teacher workforce.
