The Issue

For more than 50 years, the International Languages Program has been a cornerstone of education in Toronto, offering students at the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) and the Toronto District School Board the invaluable opportunity to learn and preserve their heritage and international languages. This program is not just a course; it is a vital component that contributes to the cognitive development, academic achievement, cultural understanding, and social inclusion of our students. As a member of this diverse community, it breaks my heart to see this vital program axed without consultation by the Minister of Education. The commitment made by Premier Doug Ford to protect this program must be honored, for the sake of our current and future generations.

Research strongly supports the benefits of multilingual education, showing that it strengthens cognitive development and leads to higher academic achievement. Moreover, it plays a critical role in promoting cultural understanding and social inclusion, qualities essential for thriving in Ontario's diverse landscape. Ontario remains one of the most diverse provinces in Canada, with a rich tapestry of communities eager to maintain their linguistic and cultural heritages while also integrating into broader Canadian society.

Unfortunately, the abrupt discontinuation of the International Languages Program threatens this essential integration and the educational enrichment it provides. By reinstituting the International Languages Program, Premier Ford can demonstrate a true commitment to fostering a rich, multicultural community and honoring the promise made to parents and families within the TCDSB.

We urge Premier Doug Ford to stand by his word and reinstate the International Languages Program. Reinforcement of this program would not only respect his pledge to protect access to multilingual education but would also affirm the importance of diversity and inclusion within our educational system. Let us work together to ensure that future generations continue to benefit from the cognitive, academic, cultural, and social advantages that this program confers.

Please join us in calling on Premier Doug Ford to reinstate the International Languages Program in the Toronto Catholic District School Board. Sign the petition today and make a difference for our children's future.
