Keep Winward zoned to Youngblood Elementary
The Issue
In our community, the alignment of school zones holds utmost importance. For families residing in the Winward neighborhood in Katy, Texas, the decision to keep this area zoned to Youngblood Elementary is not just about educational quality; it’s about preserving a community hub that fosters growth, learning, and togetherness among our children.
As parents and guardians, the relationship our children build with their school extends beyond academics — it nurtures social and emotional growth. Many of us chose this neighborhood in large part due to its proximity to Youngblood Elementary, just 1.4 miles away - walking distance. Disrupting this connection through rezoning will not only fragment established community ties, but will impose unnecessary stress on our children as they adapt to a new academic environment.
Beyond the emotional toll, there is a serious practical concern. Winward has only one road in and out of the neighborhood, forcing every family onto the same route to reach any school we’re zoned to. That route crosses FM 529 and Katy Hockley, where wait times exceed 10 minutes during school hours, followed by an unprotected left turn onto Pitts Rd with no traffic signal. Rezoning Winward away from the closest, walkable elementary school - onto a route with one of the most congested intersections in the area and no safe alternate path - creates real safety risk and unnecessary daily strain for families with young children.
Katy ISD is experiencing significant enrollment growth, and we understand the need for boundary adjustments. But any rezoning decision should be transparent and considerate of the communities it impacts. Rezoning without proper consultation undermines trust in our educational governance.
We call on the Katy ISD Board of Trustees and the Demographics Committee to:
1. Keep Winward zoned to Youngblood Elementary.
2. Set and communicate a specific date for a public meeting where affected families can voice their concerns before any final decision is made.
