I am deeply concerned about the proposed change to allow rifle hunting in Wilkin County, Minnesota. Having lived here my entire life, I have witnessed firsthand the delicate balance of our ecosystem and the unique challenges it faces. One of these challenges is managing the deer population effectively and ensuring the sustainability of our local wildlife and the safety it has on our local hunters. 

Currently, Wilkin County is a shotgun-only hunting zone, which has played a critical role in maintaining this balance. Shotguns inherently limit the range of hunters, which aids in preventing overhunting and preserves the local deer population. This restriction has always been vital in protecting the wildlife and ensuring that our environment thrives for future generations to enjoy.

However, the decision to transition our county into a rifle zone threatens to disrupt this balance. Rifles, with their extended range, would increase the hunting pressure significantly. This rise in hunting activity could lead to a sharp decline in the deer population, threatening not only the ecosystem but also the hunters who rely on it.

Additionally, the shift to a rifle zone will likely attract more hunters from neighboring states. While out of state hunters are welcome, the influx of out-of-state hunters will put further strain on our wildlife resources, making it challenging for local hunters to sustain their practices. Our county could become overcrowded with hunters, leading to unsafe hunting conditions and increased tension among hunting communities.

I urge the Wilkin County commissioners to consider the long-term ramifications of this decision. The health of our ecosystem depends on maintaining our current shotgun-only zoning. By keeping Wilkin County a shotgun-only zone, we can protect our wildlife, ensure a sustainable hunting environment, and preserve our traditions for years to come.
