Keep UT-Austin Safe: Parents Against Guns in Dorms and Classrooms

We are parents of students at the University of Texas-Austin, and we request that the University curtail the Texas Legislature’s SB11, known as Campus Carry, as it applies to the UT-Austin campus (and all University of Texas campuses). We want concealed firearms to be banned from our children’s classrooms and dormitories, and we want those settings designated GUN-FREE ZONES.

We know from personal experience what a volatile time the college years can be, both emotionally and socially, and we fear that the widespread presence of guns on campus due to this law will greatly compromise the safety of our children. As Chancellor William H. McRaven noted in his letter to Governor Greg Abbott when the bill was being considered, "There is great concern that the presence of handguns, even if limited to licensed individuals age 21 or older, will lead to an increase in both accidental shootings and self-inflicted wounds."

Allowing guns into campus buildings will only serve to increase opportunities for suicide, accidents and violent incidents. Suicide is the second-highest cause of death among college students across the U.S. That is a fact.

As parents of UT-Austin students, we refuse to be numb and silent in the face of such thoughtless, counter-productive legislation with the potential to have a devastating effect on our children’s lives. Concealed firearms must be banned from classrooms and dormitories so that our children can dream of a better future, not walk in fear of an uncertain present.
