The Issue

Latin class at Walter Payton is not only an enriching course but a passionate community of students who love the ancient world and all that is in it. From excelling in Certamen to accumulating hundreds of awards at the Illinois Junior Classical League (ILJCL), the Latin students at Payton showcase their vast knowledge and have so much fun. Latin should not be taken away, especially with the huge growth in the community, and is vital to Payton's academic and cultural identity.

The potential removal of upper levels of Latin (3, 4, and AP) and reducing the Latin teacher's position is not just a harmful change, but it demonstrates the lack of unique opportunities offered at Payton, the unjust use of funding, and the destructive cutting of departments. Our Latin program is more than just learning a language- it opens the opportunity to learn  history, the nuances of ancient literature, how to work with others, and surmount rigorous material. This program fosters critical thinking, discipline, and a love of learning that transcends the classroom, seen by the Rome trip and vast after school opportunities.

Given the current achievements of students within the program, such as multiple perfect scores on the National Latin Exam, eliminating the upper levels would prevent the growth of this thriving community. Payton's Latin students consistently excel in competitions and material, gaining recognition and awards that bring honor to our school. It's detrimental that we maintain and support these upper-level courses, especially as we expand the program’s peer tutoring and course outline to best fit students’ needs.

A full-time Latin teacher is crucial in providing stability and an ongoing mentorship that students need to build confidence in the course. Our teacher is incredible at Latin and genuinely cares for his students, constantly answering questions and dedicating countless hours to providing helpful materials. Reducing this position would undermine the quality of education and not allow students to get a true experience of Latin, especially with the upper levels being so vital to truly understanding the ancient language. It's essential to keep the commitment to an informative and well-rounded education at Walter Payton, which includes keeping rigorous courses like upper-level Latin.

We compel the administration to continue supporting the Latin program and ensure the teaching position remains full-time. Sign this petition to preserve the integrity of Payton’s Latin program, protect our passionate and well-achieving community, and uphold the academic standards that make Walter Payton exceptional.
