Keep UP Connected: Stop plans for disruptive traffic diverters in UP
The Issue
As a long-time UP resident, it's become clear that the proposed traffic diverters planned for the town, including at the intersection of Clagett Road and Clagett-Pineway among other locations, could severely impact our community's daily life—and not for the better. While I understand the intention to reduce through traffic, the ramifications of diverting vehicles onto other neighboring streets is a frustrating inconvenience for all of us who depend on these roads. You can see a look at the plans here: https://www.upmd.org/DocumentCenter/View/3125/All-Concept-Options
As an example of the likely impacts, Clagett Road serves as an essential route for many in our community. Redirecting traffic from this vital road could lead to congestion, longer travel times, and increased pollution on Woodberry and Van Buren streets—roads not designed to handle this additional traffic load. These outcomes will not only inconvenience residents but may also pose safety issues for our local children, cyclists, and pedestrians who use these streets every day. These same negative impacts will extend to the other areas of town where diverters are being explored.
Community feedback is a crucial aspect of responsible planning, yet it seems that the voices of dissent among us are being overlooked in the rush to push these changes forward. In fact, much of this discussion is not making its way to the town residents. Local officials must engage in open and transparent discussions with residents, considering alternative solutions that address traffic issues without compromising the residents' quality of life and safety.
Studies have shown that smart traffic management strategies, such as improved signage, designated pedestrian zones, and revisiting existing speed limits, can effectively manage congestion without resorting to drastic measures like diverters. By exploring these and other proven traffic-calming methods, the town can strike a healthier balance between improving road safety and maintaining resident accessibility.
I urge you to join me in opposing the installation of these traffic diverters that threaten to disrupt our community's fabric. Let us call upon our town officials to listen to the constituents they serve and seek alternatives that prioritize the welfare and convenience of all residents.
Please sign this petition to preserve the harmony and accessibility of our beloved town streets. Together, we can advocate for solutions that align with the needs and best interests of our entire community.
