The Issue

Keep Travis Truett Away From Jackson County Schools and Stop Him From Coaching Kids
Parents in Jackson County deserve to know that the people being allowed around their children at school and in youth activities have been properly screened and that student safety comes first.

This petition concerns Travis Dale Truett, a former Jackson County teacher.

While Truett was working as a fifth-grade teacher at Tyner Elementary School, Kentucky State Police arrested him in a case involving one of his female students.

Contemporary Associated Press reporting states that police alleged Truett sent the student sexually suggestive emails containing pornographic images and tried to get her to meet him after school for sex.

Truett later pleaded guilty to a federal offense involving the transfer of obscene material to a minor.

He was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison, ordered to pay nearly $22,000 in restitution, placed on supervised release, and required to give up his teaching certificate for life.

That distinction is important. The allegation that he tried to arrange an after-school meeting with the student for sex was reported by police, while his guilty plea, prison sentence, restitution, and lifetime surrender of his teaching certificate are documented parts of the federal case.

Why are we concerned now?
Concerns have been raised that Travis Truett is now coaching or participating in coaching activities involving school-age children and continues to be permitted on school property.

We are asking the Jackson County Board of Education to determine exactly what coaching, volunteer, athletic, or other role he currently has and what access he is being given to students and school facilities.

There are also questions concerning appearances at school that do not appear to have been ordinary visits involving his own child.

The district should explain when Travis Truett has been permitted on school property, why he was there, what permission was required, who approved it, and what safeguards were in place.

The Kentucky General Assembly currently identifies Timmy Truett as the state representative for House District 89 and as a principal with the Jackson County Board of Education.

because Travis Truett's access to schools and children is the issue, the public deserves to know whether his brother had any involvement in allowing, approving, arranging, or facilitating that access.

Any decision concerning Travis Truett's school access or coaching activities should be made without involvement from a family member or anyone else with a personal conflict of interest.

What we are asking for
We, the undersigned, are asking the Jackson County Board of Education to:

Stop Travis Truett from coaching or assisting with coaching children through Jackson County schools.
Stop him from serving as a school volunteer, supervisor, mentor, trainer, or in any other discretionary role that gives him access to students.
Restrict his discretionary access to Jackson County school buildings, practices, athletic facilities, team areas, and other school property to the fullest extent allowed by law.
Determine what coaching, volunteer, athletic, or other roles he currently holds or has recently held involving children.
Determine what school property he has been allowed to access, why he was there, and who approved that access.
Determine whether Timmy Truett or any other relative participated in any decision regarding Travis Truett's access, coaching, volunteering, or participation in school activities.
Review all background checks, approvals, permissions, waivers, visitor records, coaching records, volunteer records, and other documentation concerning that access.
Preserve relevant visitor logs, security footage, emails, text messages, athletic records, coaching records, volunteer records, approvals, and administrative communications.
Give parents a clear written explanation of what access Travis Truett has been given and what action the district is taking.
This is about the safety of children
This petition is not asking anyone to rely on rumors or social-media accusation

There is a documented federal case. Truett was a teacher when the conduct occurred. Police alleged that he tried to arrange an after-school meeting with one of his female students for sex. He later pleaded guilty to the federal offense involving obscene material sent to a minor, went to federal prison, and surrendered his teaching certificate for life.

The current questions about coaching and school access should be answered with official records.

If someone had to surrender his teaching certificate for life following a federal case involving one of his students, parents have a legitimate reason to ask why he is reportedly coaching children or receiving discretionary access to school property today.

By signing this petition, we are asking the Jackson County Board of Education to keep Travis Truett away from discretionary access to students and stop him from coaching children through the school system.

Parents deserve answers. Children deserve safeguards. The rules should apply regardless of who someone is related to.
