On Sunday 5th November we are planning on holding a Rally at Thirlmere to Protest against the continuing closure of the Road to all walkers, cyclists and motorists. We want to get our message across to United Utilities that this road needs to be reopened to allow a safe, enjoyable and important route for locals and visitors to use.
The focus of the Rally is to express our collective disgust at United Utilities and their abject failure to protect public safety and respect public rights of way at Thirlmere. It appears that United Utilities have no intention to fix the Thirlmere West Road and so they need to be called out for just how unacceptable their behaviour is to the Public.
The current plan is for Walkers (and young child cyclists) to meet at Armboth Car Park and set off from there at 10.45am to walk south along the road to the United Utility fences near Rough Crag. Cyclists to meet at Legburthwaite Car Park and set off from there at 10.45am to ride across the Dam and down past Armboth to the same fences near Rough Crag. Then have a Rally at those fences from 11.30am. This will be a peaceful, responsible and legal rally … no damage, no trespassing and no litter !
We are not recommending or planning for anyone to ride along the A591, its just too dangerous and we think we need to make that point by avoiding it rather than riding it. I know some people think that is a bit wimpish, but we really really dont want any bike versus car action on this Rally.
Please come and support this Rally.
NOTE : Legburthwaite Car Park is accessed from St John’s in the Vale, about half a mile from the junction with the A591.
NOTE : Armboth Car Park is accessed from the section of Dual Carriageway on the A591 where you turn left on to the Thirlmere West Road (narrow in places). Please do not be put off by the “Road Ahead Closed” sign as the closure is just past Armboth Car Park which is 2 miles down this road.
NOTE : Seriously Adverse Weather on the day might disrupt these plans. Please check back here on Saturday 4th for an update to make sure all is going ahead.
