However, all too soon, the flags are taken down — with no ceremony or explanation. The vibrant energy they bring disappears, leaving behind the same familiar streets without the visual impact they provide. The only other time the streets feel as alive is when the magnificent Christmas decorations are up — but that’s only for a brief period.
We are calling on The Crown Estate, Westminster City Council, and The New West End Company — the organisations responsible for managing these flags — to make this iconic display a year-round feature. Let’s keep the Union Jack flags flying, or at the very least, keep them up for a longer portion of the year, such as during national holidays, the summer tourism season, royal anniversaries, and other culturally significant dates.
