The Issue

On Friday, during Storm Amy, my parents were plunged into darkness as power to their home was lost. As if that wasn't enough, their mobile phone signal vanished, leaving them isolated from the outside world. My stepdad, who is gravely ill with cancer, faced the daunting task of navigating the darkened house. Unfortunately, during his attempt to get to bed, he tripped and fell. My mother, unable to lift him by herself, was left in a state of panic and deep concern that he may have suffered serious injury.

In that critical moment, it was the humble and steadfast traditional analogue landline phone that came to their rescue. Without a functioning mobile signal, my mother could still dial for an ambulance. Even though it took agonising two hours to arrive, she was at least able to call for help and stay connected with emergency services in their time of need.

Traditional analogue landlines have proven time and again to be a lifeline in emergencies, particularly during adverse weather conditions when mobile networks can become unreliable. These connections are not just a backup; for some, they are the only reliable means of communication.

Telecommunication companies are proposing to change ALL analogue phone lines to digital, with thousands already been swapped over.  These run on WiFi so when there is a powercut, and wifi goes down, digital phone lines DO NOT WORK.  That means no way of contacting relatives, no way of alerting emergency services…..it can literally mean the difference between life or death!

We urge telecommunication companies and decision-makers to recognise the vital role that traditional analogue landline phones play in our communities, especially for vulnerable individuals and those in remote areas where mobile signals may not be dependable. It's not just about nostalgia; it's about safety, security, and the assurance that comes with having a reliable link to emergency services.

Please join us in calling for the preservation of traditional landline phone services to ensure everyone remains connected and safe in today's world. Sign this petition to make your voice heard and protect the communication lifeline that so many depend on.
