Keep the Oromocto Eagles: Preserve the Legacy of Our Competitive Hockey
The Issue
Imagine walking into the hockey arena, proudly carrying an Eagles bag over your shoulder. That feeling—of pride, accomplishment, and belonging—is something our kids have cherished for years. The sight of the Eagles’ name and emblem sparks inspiration, reminding us of the rich history and countless memories tied to our community.
Recently, the Oromocto Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) board proposed a rebrand that would give all teams—both recreational and competitive—the name Eagles. This decision has sparked widespread concern and disappointment across Oromocto, New Brunswick.
Our competitive Eagles teams have long been a source of pride, carrying not just the hopes of young athletes, but the spirit and collective identity of our town. The name Eagles is more than a title—it’s a legacy earned through passion, skill, and dedication on the ice. Being an Eagle has always been earned, not given.
Now, a small group of board members have made this decision unilaterally, without meaningful consultation or transparency. Community members who have built, supported, and nurtured this program feel ignored and dismissed. There has also been no clear budget or plan presented to support such a rebrand—raising further concerns about its necessity and impact.
Being an Eagle represents more than cultural heritage—it’s a strong community bond. Parents, players, coaches, alumni, and fans have come together season after season under this name, celebrating hard-fought victories, learning from losses, and creating memories that have shaped our town’s identity.
We understand that change can sometimes be necessary. But it should never come at the expense of community voice or cherished traditions. Why fix what isn’t broken?
We are calling on the OMHA board to respect the legacy of the competitive Eagles program and to preserve the name exclusively for our competitive teams. This small but powerful distinction honors the efforts of those who have earned the title and keeps the tradition alive for future generations to aspire to.
Please sign this petition to ensure our competitive hockey teams continue as the Oromocto Eagles, protecting a legacy that belongs to the players, families, and fans who have lived it—and to those who still dream of it.
