The Issue

I donated a bench to be placed outside the Costcutter convenience store in Northam, a gesture aimed at helping the older customers who often shop there. The bench serves as a resting spot for those who find standing for long periods exhausting, offering them a moment to sit, gather their energy, and continue their day with dignity and comfort.

Recently, there have been discussions about its removal, which is alarming and upsetting. Removing the bench would take away a simple yet valuable resource from our elderly community members. Many have already expressed their appreciation for having a place to rest during their shopping excursions. Our community thrives on inclusion and support, and taking away such an amenity does not align with the values we cherish.

According to the Office for National Statistics, the population aged 65 and over is increasing noticeably. Tools like benches in public areas are crucial in accommodating this demographic shift, providing necessary support to maintain independence.

If the Town Council is concerned about costs related to maintenance or possible misuse, we propose forming a volunteer group. Supporters of the bench could assist in regular upkeep and monitoring, ensuring the bench remains a benefit to the community and not subject to vandalism or misuse.

We urge Northam Town Council to consider the needs of older residents and the positive impact of this bench. Let us work together to ensure they continue to shop and participate in our community comfortably and safely.

Please sign this petition to keep the bench where it truly belongs—to serve our community.
