The Issue

The Robbinsville Municipal Complex consists of volleyball, basketball, and pickleball courts that are heavily utilized by the locals. Not only are the facilities well maintained, but they provide lights that allow the use of the courts to continue after dusk which extends their usability significantly.

Although the lights are a very welcome feature, it's recently caused slight frustration among the local community that have utilized the area for years. Before the Robbinsville Police Department moved buildings in June, the lights would stay on for nearly as long as the facilities were used. If there were athletes still using the courts, the Police Department would notice and keep those lights on, even past midnight. This was very generous gesture by the local PD that was always well appreciated.

Once the Robbinsville PD moved locations, the lights were set to a timer. They were originally kept on until 11:30PM from Monday to Thursday to accommodate for the local volleyball league that played on those days and later extended to all days of the week. Recently, many people have noticed the lights would now turn off for the volleyball and basketball courts at 10:45PM and shortly after, the pickleball court lights would do the same.

Although having any lights at all is a blessing, having those lights cut off at 10:45PM after years of having them on until past midnight throws a wrench into the expectations of recreational athletes in the area. The volleyball league runs until 9:30PM-10:00PM. That means that people who are not in those leagues can only access those facilities for about an hour before everything goes dark. Many of the night time park-goers can only go during the night on weekdays due to work, families, and other obligations. For some, they travel farther away to play here as facilities with lights are uncommon. And with only an hour or so of play, it's simply not worth it for them anymore. It essentially eliminates the ability to play the sports that they love, or limits them to finding other availabilities in their schedules because they've been relying on this night time schedule for years.

What we're asking does not take a lot of resources for the town of Robbinsville. Keep the lights on for an hour longer from Spring until mid-Fall. Having the lights on until midnight would be ideal but going back to having them turn off at 11:30PM would make many people more than happy. We understand that it is approaching cold season and we would not require those lights from mid-Fall until the Spring.

We hope you'll consider this small request that would make such a big difference to frequent park-goers that have been using this complex for years. Thank you!
