The Issue

For those of us who care deeply about the education and well-being of the students at Belleville High School (BHS) in Belleville, MI, the recent decision to remove the current counseling staff is alarming. As a parent deeply invested in the success of your children, I've witnessed firsthand the incredible dedication and care these counselors have shown. It is disheartening that the administration seems intent on letting go of those who genuinely care about the students in this district.

For years, these counselors have provided invaluable support to students, helping them navigate the complex challenges of high school life. From offering guidance on academic paths to lending emotional and psychological support, their contributions cannot be understated. Removing them denies students access to these proven resources.

The student body's mental health and academic success should be the utmost priority. Statistics indicate that schools with strong counseling teams see better student outcomes, including higher graduation rates and improved mental health among students. The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) advocates for a ratio of 250 students per counselor, yet many schools fail to meet this standard. BHS should indeed strive to not only meet but exceed these recommendations by retaining the skilled counselors it has.

We understand the need for administrative strategies and budget considerations, but not at the expense of our students' futures. Instead of replacing dedicated staff, the school should invest in training and better resources for these counselors so they can continue to excel in their roles.

Please join in calling on the Belleville High School administration to reconsider this decision and keep our current counselors on staff. Their presence is crucial to maintaining the health, happiness, and academic success of our children. Sign this petition to show your support and make a difference in our school community.

Please come and show your support for our BHS counselors at the upcoming School Board Meeting on June 9, 2025 at 7 pm at BHS Commons.
