Keep the Cats at TLU

The Issue

Recently a decision has been made to remove all cats that call Texas Lutheran University home. If you've ever traveled around Seguin, you've probably noticed the large stray cat population within the town. TLU is no stranger to this as several stray cats live on and around the campus. The cats that have found their way onto campus are beloved by the students and staff. To some people it might seem "trashy" to have stray cats on your property, but the cats have little to no effect on the campus itself besides improving the general mood.

It is fair to say that the cats that are in the process of being moved will be better off if they end up getting adopted but an overflow of strays across Texas in shelters means this is less likely to happen resulting in poorer lives. It's also fair to say the care of the cats is unsustainable as a very small group of compassionate volunteers monitor and feed the cats that reside on campus, doing so out of the kindness of their hearts.

Rather than remove the cats from campus TLU should do what it has often done in other situations and take charge in its community. For instance, since no regular easily accessible food bank can be found in Seguin for its students, TLU made its own food pantry to serve them and be a leader in the community. In the same way TLU should take the initiative to take care of the cats by caring for them itself and being a role model for a stray cat problem all of the fellow Seguin community experiences.
